In 2013 a young Wayne McKinney would walk into his first ever basketball tryout at the Beaverton Hoop YMCA. Having never played on a real basketball team before he lacked the basic skills and fundamentals. I remember him traveling, fouling kids, and shooting the ball with two hands over his head like he was making an over head pass. Despite his lack of basketball experience what Wayne did have was athleticism and passion. He worked as hard as he could at that tryout and that landed him a spot on our 5th grade team, where he would play season after season along side a very talented group of kids.
Now Wayne McKinney III is a college sophomore and the starting point guard for the University of San Diego. You can find his games from time to time on tv. He is still chasing his dream of becoming a professional basketball player and we all enjoy following his long journey!
